10 Foods That Help Alleviate Morning Sickness

Morning Sickness has often been described as a three month long hangover. Most pregnant women are not popping Tylenol, gulping down water or a beer and going back to sleep for three months. Instead, try eating these foods right after waking up; you might even ask your partner to bring them to you in bed.

1. Lemon

Pregnant women seem to swear by lemon anything. Lemon drops, lemonade and just lemons. Keep them handy to put in water or just to smell.

2. Ginger

Ginger calms the stomach regardless of pregnancy. The results are best when the ginger is raw and fresh. Buy some ginger and peel, chop and freeze it so that you always have some. Find food to add it to and even boil it for ginger tea before bed. Consult a doctor about taking ginger supplement.

3. Peppermint

Crush up peppermint candies and add them to lemonade, tea or ice cream. Anise or peppermint teas are nausea reducers as well. Grow a mint or peppermint plant and add the leaves to salads for added digestion help. The plant will also make the room smell nice.

4. Whole Grains

This fiber rich choice helps prevent the many symptoms of morning sickness. Try eating a whole grain piece of dry toast or English muffin before getting up in the morning. Perhaps a bowl of whole grain oatmeal with almonds and berries will help while also delivering many yummy nutrients.

5. Greek Yogurt

The live-culture bacteria in Greek yogurt aids digestion and boosts the immune system. This is a wonderful base for lemon, ginger and mint or whole grains.

6. Bland Anything

Try starting the day with bland crackers or toast in bed. Just get something bland in your stomach before the nausea gets bad. This will give your stomach something to digest instead of so much acid.

7. Baked Potato

A small plain baked potato is an excellent source of starch to settle the stomach. Hold the butter, salt and sour cream for later.

8. Ice Chips

Some women get to the point where they cannot even keep water down. De-hydration can induce vomiting during any stage of pregnancy. Suck or crunch on some ice chips to keep small bits of water in your system before trying another glass of water.

9. Simple Electrolyte Replacement

If the nausea is not decreasing after hydration, try electrolyte replacement instead of just water. Squirt some lemon juice in a glass of water; add a pinch of salt and some baking soda. Sweeten with stevia or another pregnancy-safe sweetener.

10. Green Apples

Another odd food that helps morning sickness is green apples. Keep a bowl in the kitchen or refrigerator. Sniff a cut apple or take a few bites to calm the stomach down.

Some women, the lucky few, do not experience morning sickness. However, the 50% that do need some help. Inform your partner of what is actually happening and ask for their help. Being pregnant should not be a lonely road, especially with morning sickness.
