Surviving Christmas While Pregnant

Although the holidays are often the happiest time of the year, they can also become the most stressful, especially for a pregnant woman. You may be dealing with choosing the right foods, drinks, decorations, presents, parties, and the list goes on. Your responsibilities over the holidays may be more demanding than usual. In order to create the perfect Christmas, you may end up doing several things at once, exhausting yourself.

However, as much as you want to have a perfect Christmas, your health and the baby’s is more important. You can follow these five easy tips to help eliminate some of the stress that the holidays may bring.

1) Write It Down:
Buy a big calender to put on the wall and even a pocket calender to keep with you. Be sure to write down each event that you are planning on going to. Also, keep track of your doctor’s appointments, kid’s appointments, husband’s appointments, etc. Having it all clearly written on each day will ensure that you do not double or over book yourself.

You will be invited to several different Christmas parties and functions. It is not realistic to attend every function. Pick the ones that you want to attend and RSVP. Explain to the others that you simply need your rest during this time. Perhaps next year will be different.

3) Choose Where
Even if you would like to spend the holidays at your parent’s house across the country, it may not be a plausible idea. Remember that you can always visit later after the baby is born. Rather than visit at Christmas and again two months later (think two round trip costs), just save the visit for later.

4) Assign Chores and Jobs:
If you are the lucky one who gets to have the entire family over to your house, do not plan on cooking, cleaning, and decorating on your own. Assign a specific job such as mashing the potatoes to one person and assign a chore such as doing the dishes to another. It is not realistic to think that you can simply do it all.

5) Take Advantage of the Internet
Shopping and dealing with the huge crowds of people may be too much for you this year. Most stores have an online website in which you can purchase the same items. You can do all of this from the comfort of your own home. It’s shipped right to your door (sometimes even gift wrapped).

Just remember that the holidays are a time for cheer and celebration. Do not overly stress yourself or expect too much of yourself. Enjoy the time with family, but allow them to take over some chores this year.
