enduring belly button trauma during pregnancy belly growth (lol)

The Pregnant Belly Button

Everyone’s belly button is unique, even a topic of pride for some. Innys and outys alike will witness changes to their belly buttons during pregnancy due to the baby growing inside. Discomfort, lifestyle choices and pregnancy stage will all play a part in the transformation of individual belly buttons. Most will revert back to their pre-pregnancy belly buttons after the birth.

Rings and Things

Belly button rings during pregnancy do not have any known related medical issues. Removing or keeping this adornment is completely up to the individual. Some physicians suggest removal because as the belly stretches there could be tearing. However, the baby is not as risk. Some women take their rings out because the pregnancy has made it uncomfortable or unsightly. Then, some women are able to wear their ring throughout the pregnancy and even through labor.

Inny to Outy

A common change for pregnant women comes from their belly buttons. This rather benign piece of anatomy becomes prominent through clothing due to the belly growing and pushing it outward. This is a temporary condition that little can be done about. Some women place a piece of tape over their new outy belly button, while others wear it proudly. While most poky belly buttons are harmless, always check with your doctor or midwife if pain occurs. A sudden or painful bump could be the indication of a hernia.

Smooth Sailing

The other common belly button change is for it to almost disappear. Some belly buttons flatten out as the abdomen grows. This change will also revert to the pre-pregnancy norm after the birth. The flat, taut belly button may feel stretched or uncomfortable. Relief is found through moisturizing frequently to prevent skin cracking or stretch marks.

Warning Signs

Any abnormal pain during pregnancy should be reported to a doctor immediately. The skin stretching across your stomach could be the cause of pain and discomfort during pregnancy. Itching and stretch marks are also normal. This pain and discomfort are preventable through hydration and moisturizers. However, if the pain appears deeper or more muscular there could be an underlying issue.

Always consult a health care professional when pain occurs during pregnancy. Pain is the body saying something is wrong. Pregnancy changes the body is so many wonderful ways, not the least of which is the pregnant belly button sticking out. It is like a badge announcing the bundle of joy about to enter the world. Wear the pregnant belly and belly button proudly. This time is magical, enjoy it to the fullest.
